Welcome to the Fundraising Foundation for Research into Manual Therapies

What is the Fundraising Foundation for Research into Manual Therapies? According to its constitution this foundation was formed to promote research connected with manual therapies. We provide traditional support in various forms to researchers and research projects. However we would also like to stimulate exchange of information and experience.

Background

This fundraising foundation was formed in 2003. The background to the initiative is that most of the manual therapies are ancient and well proved. Well-educated, trained therapists know very well how the methods are to be used. However the fact that .everyone knows. is not enough. It must be possible to prove claims made by systematic research . not least in the world of science.

Initiators

After working for a long time to improve the quality of the massage business, the members of the Swedish Massage Advisory Council (Branschrådet Svensk Massage) and the specialist magazine Massage & Kroppsvård took the initiative of forming the Fundraising Foundation for Research into Manual Therapies. The aim of the Swedish Massage Advisory Council, which was formed in 1998, is to enhance the professional skills of masseurs and the credibility of the business. The Council.s activities include quality assurance of massage training courses through certification of masseurs.

Funds to be used correctly

The Fundraising Foundation for Research into Manual Therapies maintains total transparency and is under the supervision of the County Administrative Board of Östergötland County. This supervisory body is always entitled to request information from the Foundation and may intervene if, for example, a negative report is received from a member of the general public. The Fundraising Foundation for Research into Manual Therapies is also monitored by Stiftelsen för insamlingskontroll (a foundation charged with the monitoring of non profit organisations), which is the only organisation in Sweden authorised to issue giro accounts using 90 at the beginning of the account number. Regulations for granting use of such an account are extremely strict and applicants are closely examined.

Research is underway

One of the primary tasks of the Fundraising Foundation for Research into Manual Therapies is to collect funds in order to carry out such research. The Foundation.s first project began in the autumn of 2003 with postgraduate student Tobias Sundberg, who conducts research at Karolinska Institutet. Tobias is a physiotherapist, masseur and has a Master.s degree in Medical Science. His research studies are aimed at manual therapies and massage under the supervision of Dr. Torkel Falkenberg at the Unit for Studies of Integrative Health Care (CSC). The area that Tobias is studying is often referred to internationally as integrative medicine. This research may be summarised as different methods of examining, developing and evaluating opportunities for the integration of complementary medical treatment methods, such as manual therapies, and conventional medicine.

Support is also provided for a project at the Sahlgrenska Academy in Gothenburg concerning massage for asthma-like conditions.
